3 Different Berries and Benefits of Blueberry, Blackberry and Strawberry

A berry fruit has its own unique nutritional values and functional benefits. The antioxidants in berries can help our body fight oxidative stress caused by free radicals that can lead to illness. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help improve our health, protect skin and hair and prevent certain diseases. All fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, but nutrient-rich berries are some of the absolute best sources.

Blueberry

Blueberry refers to the plants of genus Vaccinium, which also includes cranberries, bilberries and many wild shrubs. This plant produces edible, round, blue berries (botanically false berries) with flared "crowns" at the end. In North America, the most common cultivated species is V. corymbosum, the Northern Highbush Blueberry. These plant can be both cultivated or picked wild. The fruit color is first white, then reddish-purple, and turn blue on ripening.They are used in jellies, jams & pies. Improves antioxidant in body and provides special protection from oxidative stress and helps in the protection of cardiovascular system. Black Berry

The blackberry is an aggregate fruit that is composed of many smaller fruits called drupes. The fruit is very dark purple with smooth, fragile skin. In the center of the cluster is a greenish-white core that extends to almost the bottom of the berry. Blackberries can be easily confused with raspberries, but raspberries (including black raspberries) have a hollow center. Blackberries are red and hard when they are immature and turn black and shiny when they ripen.

  • The red coloring contains anthocyanins, which stimulate the burning of stored fat. When a group of animals was fed a high-fat diet along with anthocyanins, they gained 24 percent less weight than the animals eating the high-fat diet without added anthocyanins.
